Ingredients
- Vaalaipoo(வாழைப்பூ)/Banana flower 1full
- Onion 1no. (finely chopped)
- Green chillies 4-5 no.s (chopped)
- Toor dal 3-4 tbsp ( 3/4th cooked)
- Curry leaves 1twig
- mustard seeds 1/2 tsp
- chana dal 1tbsp
- turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
- salt as needed.
- Oil 1tbsp
- Remove the pink dotted 2 parts in the picture,from all the flowers and chop nicely then soak it in buttermilk until start cooking.
- Heat oil in an available vessel, and add mustard seeds allow to pop and add channa dal fry till golden brown.
- Then add chopped onions,green chillies and curry leaves..sprinkle some salt.
- Fry the onions lightly and add chopped banana flowers(வாழைப்பூ)
- Add turmeric powder and enough salt ,mix well.
- Pour 1/4 cup water ,close the lid and cook till the flowers become soft and cooked.
- At last add the cooked toor dal and give it a stir.
- Now the vaalaipoo poriyal is ready.
- Try this poriyal,really healthy and tasty..goes well with sambar rice,rasam sadham, curd rice and any variety rice.
Note: Soaking the chopped flowers in buttermilk will helps to reduce bitterness of the flower and retain the original color.If u want u can also add 2tbsp of shredded coconut at the end to enhance the taste. Cook toor dal with 1cup water with little turmeric,no need to cook softly 3/4th cooking is enough .you can also replace toor dal with moongdal or channa dal.
