Kachayam / Rava paniyaram / Low Calorie Banana Fritters

My mom and grandmom used to make this delicious sweet for naivedyam -kirthigai viratham, panguni viratham and for any special occasions & festivals. The actual recipe is deep frying, but i wanted to make it a low calorie snack so cooked in paniyaram pan/aebleskiver pan. And also the original recipe uses sugar but i substituted it with Jaggery. This is another easy and healthy recipe to use your over ripe bananas. Give it a try definitely you will love it.

Ingredients
  1. Rava/sooji    1 cup
  2. Maida/All purpose flour    3/4 cup
  3. Powdered Jaggery   1 cup
  4. Banana   1 no.
  5. Cardamom powder    1/2 tsp or crush 3-4 pods
  6. Cooking soda    a pinch
  7. Oil/ghee   as needed
Add Jaggery in 1 cup warm water, leave it aside for few minutes, then stir well and dissolve it completely and  then filter the liquid and use.

Method
  • Take a bowl, add rava, maida, cooking soda, cardamom powder and mix well.
  • Then add mashed banana and mix everything well and add the jaggery water and stir well.
  • Make it to a thick batter (idly batter consistency) with water and set aside for 30-40 minutes or u can leave for 1 hr also.
  • After that,stir the batter well .
  • Heat paniyaram pan and add few drops of oil/butter/ghee in each groove and pour a spoonful to batter to each hole and drizzle oil around each hole and cook till crispy and golden brown on both side.(2 minutes on each side)
Notes:
Instead of jaggery you can also use 3/4 cup sugar and directly add to the flour-semolina mixture and  mix well and using water make the batter.
Like wise you can also deep fry it, directly spoon the batter into the hot oil and fry till golden brown.
