Wishing You All a Very Happy Tamil New Year 2011.Suzhiyam/Kalla paniyaram is traditional south indian sweet..My mom n grandma use to make this for Feast n Padaiyal. I love this very much i use to eat lot during my childhood days,but now because of toothache and health conscious i m not able to eat any of my favorite sweets. This is my 1st try..This is my 150th Post !
jaggery and chana dal mixture dipped in maida batter n deep fried...so this not for diet and health conscious people kids can enjoy this ..and once a while for special occasions can enjoy this traditional sweet... right??
Ingredients
- Maida 1 cup
- Channa dal 1 and 1/4 cup
- Jaggery 1 cup
- Cardamom 5-6 (powdered)
- Nuts (cashew n almonds) 1 fist (finley chopped)
- Salt 1/4 tsp
- Cooking soda a small pinch
- Turmeric powder a small pinch
- Oil for deep frying
Method
- Pressure cook chana dal and allow to cool and keep aside.
- Powder the jaggery and put the cooked chana dal n jaggery in a blender and blend well to smooth paste without water.
- Then transfer the grounded paste to a bowl and add chopped nuts and cardamom powder, mix well.
- Divide it into small lemon size balls (come around 25 balls) and keep aside.
- Take a wide bowl,add maida,salt,turmeric powder and cooking soda stir well and using water make it to the little thick batter (thicker than bonda mix).
- Heat oil in a wok for deep frying.
- When the oil gets really hot,take one ball at a time n dip inthe maida batter and drop carefully in to the hot oil , fry till light brown on both sides.(just like puri for for few minutes only..don't let it in oil for long time).
- Do for all the balls and drain it in paper towel.
- Thats it...yummy kalla paniyaram is ready and serve warm.
Note:
If the maida batter is thin ..you will get thin crust...
