Whole Moong Halwa / Green Gram Dal Halwa / Moongdal Halwa


            My another attempt to make Halwa with Whole Moong or Green gram dal using very less or i can say only 1 and 1/2 tbsp ghee. I also added milk mawa to this halwa to make it richer and tastier. I usually don't make halwa as it requires more ghee and also a laborious one. But for my kids , i want to try a healthier version of halwa with whole moong using milk and mawa. I tried with only 1/2 cup dal only. As moong dal and milk are a good source of protein and the ghee act as a fat source both are essential for growing kids, that too in a sweet form . Simply they loved it.
Ingredients
  1. Whole moong dal    1/2 cup
  2. Milk    1 cup
  3. Milk mawa    1 and 1/2 tbsp
  4. Sugar    1/4-1/2 cup(adjust to your taste)
  5. Ghee   1/4 cup ( but i used  only 1 and 1/2 tbsp)
  6. Cardamom powder   1/4 tsp
  7. Nuts(cashew/badam)   fistful (chopped)
Method
  • Soak whole moong dal for 6 hours or overnight.
  • Drain water and grind the whole moong dal to a fine paste using very little water and keep aside.
  • Heat about 3 tbsp of ghee in a pan/kadai, add the nuts and fry till golden brown and then remove the fried nuts to a plate and keep aside.
  • To the same pan add one more tbsp of ghee and then pour the ground dal paste and stir till it turns color or say for about 2-3 minutes.
  • Then add lukewarm milk and keep stirring till the dal completely mixes with the milk and turns to milk dal paste.
  • Keep stirring in medium heat till the raw smell of the dal leaves and starts leaving the sides of the pan.
  • At this stage add milk mawa and mix well and then add sugar and keep stirring.
  • Once the sugar gets dissolved completely , add the remaining amount of ghee and keep stirring till the ghee starts oozing and halwa starts leaving the pan.
  • Lastly add the cardamom powder and ghee roasted nuts and raisins, mix everything well  and transfer the the halwa to a greased plate or tray and if you want shape them and Enjoy !!!


Note:
Adding milk mawa is optional , i added it to enhance the halwa taste as i didn't use much ghee.
The same halwa can be done with split green gram i.e. yellow moong dal.
Increase or decrease sugar according your taste..the above measurement will give you a mild sweet halwa.
