Onion Rasam / Vengaya Rasam

Day 6 of Blogging Marathon under the theme"Rasam" and today's rasam is another simple yet tasty rasam with pearl onions/sambar onions or in tamil - Chinna Vengaya Rasam. I already posted Bottlegourd Onion Rasam and this onion rasam is little different from that. For this rasam i used both cumin-pepper and also rasam powder. To make it bit healthy i also added little Tuvar dal. Overall this is a very filling and delicious rasam. Adjust pepper to your taste. I made this rasam little thinner in consistency, adjust to your taste n desired consistency. Thinner or thicker both way this rasam tastes awesome. The recipe as follows...

Ingredients
  1. Tuvar Dal    1 fistfull
  2. Pearl Onions   8-10no.s (peeled n chopped)
  3. Tomato   1 large (chopped n mashed)
  4. Tamarind   1 tsp(diluted in 1/2 cup of water)
  5. Cumin seeds/ Jeeragam    1 and 1/2 tsp
  6. Pepper corns / Milagu     1tsp
  7. Garlic   2cloves
  8. Rasam powder    1-2 tsp
  9. Salt    to taste
  10. Turmeric powder    1/8 tsp
  11. Oil / ghee     2 tsp
  12. Mustard seeds     1/2 tsp
  13. Curry leaves    1 sprig
  14. Dry red chilli    3 no.s
  15. Hing    1/4 tsp

Method
  • Ina pressure cooker, add tuvar dal 2 cups of water , turmeric powder and pressure cook to 3 whistles and once done, mash dal lightly and keep aside until use.
  • Take a blender, add cumin-pepper-garlic and grind coarsely and keep ready.
  • Keep mashed tomato n tamarind ready.
  • Heat oil in a skillet, add mustard seeds n wait till it pop.
  • Then add hing powder, dry red chilli, curry leaves and fry well and then add onions and saute it for 1-2 minutes.
  1. After that add, tamarind water, cooked dal, mashed tomato, enough water, salt n rasam powder.
  2. Give a nice stir and sprinkle a pinch of turmeric powder and cook covered in medium heat until rasam turns frothy n boil.
  • Once it starts boiling turn off the stove and add cilantro leaves and again close it and leave it set for few more minutes.
  • That's it...Tasty n Falvorful   Onion Rasam ready.
