Kondakadalai Sundal / Black Chickpea Sundal / Kala Channa

For the second of Blogging Marathon under the theme, Vinayagar Chaturthi Specials, I am going to share a simple n healthy neivedyam ~ Kondakadalai sundal. Sundal is one of the easy neivedyam and is made on all special occasions like, vinayagar Chaturthi, Krishna Jayanthi, Saraswathi Pooja, Navarathri n many more special days. Not only on special days u can make this sundal daily for your tea time snack, as its a very healthy n filling snack. I usually make twice or thrice in a week with different legumes. I have already share 4 types of sundal recipes and u can see them Here. Each recipes is simple n different from other. This kala channa sundal is with out adding onions, just tempering is needed. Good amount of freshly shredded coconut is added for more flavor n taste. Now to the recipe...

Kondakadalai Sundal
Ingredients
  1. Black Chickpeas      1 cup or as needed
  2. Shredded Coconut    2-3 tbsp
  3. Salt      to taste
  4. Cilantro      few finely chopped
To Temper
  1. Oil      1 tsp
  2. Mustard seeds      1/4 tsp
  3. Hing     a pinch
  4. Chana dal      1 tsp
  5. Urad dal       1 tsp
  6. Dry Red Chili       1 or 2 broken
  7. Green chili      1 (finely chopped) or to taste
  8. Ginger      1 tsp (finely chopped)
Method
  • Wash n soak Black chickpeas for over night or min 6-8 hours.
  • After soaking, cook chickpeas with enough water until it cooked well n tender but not mushy.
  • or u can simply pressure cook for 1 whistle.
  • Then drain the excess water n keep aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan/wok, add the mustard seeds once it splutter then add all the ingredients one by one and fry nicely or till the dal turns light golden brown.
  • Now add chickpeas n enough salt n stir fry for a minute.
  • And then add shredded coconut n stir for a minute n lastly add some chopped cilantro n turn off the stove.
  • That's it....Simple n healthy Sundal ready.
Notes:
Over night soaking time is best for sundal preparations or if u r making it for evening snack or poojai soak it in early morning (6-7 am)
If u want u can also add some finely chopped onions after tempering n saute onion well n proceed.
Coconut is added for extra flavor n taste, if u don;t like u can omit.

    3. Roshni, Yup Sundals are made on Navarathri days- Patchanam...as we lived in Agraharam for more than 10 yrs i remember daily(all nine days) we used to go to all maami's house(6 neighbors) for Navarathri Golu n Patchanam :) feeling nostalgic !!

    4. Yes, the usage of coconut is optional, but the main ingredient has to be from the pulse/legume family. It can be made with chanas, chana dals, cow chicpeas, dried green peas, groundnuts ..the list is quite long :)

    5. even i remember my childhood days... navarathri meant going to all the neighbours houses for all 9 days for sundals. it was always a guessing game which mami will make which one.. Now i try and do some part of it. Keep a kutti Golu and make sundals, but invite everyone only on the weekend. do you do golu?
