Oats Appam / Oats Banana Fritters ~ Healthy Snack Recipe!

Karthigai Deepam Wishes to everyone, this festival of lights is also my favorite Indian festival. Love lighting diyas all over the house mainly in Kitchen, Pooja room, Main door entrance and other places wherever possible. And on street(in front of our house)I put big Rangoli or Poo Kolam and decorate it with lighted diyas. The whole street looks more beautiful and colorful with all those Rangoli n Divyas, love watching it. Really missing my hometown very much on these festival days :(
Now Coming to Oats Appam, I wanted to make something easy, healthy n interesting sweet for this special day so that i can link it to My own event happening @ Divya's space. At first I decided to make Pori Urundai with wheat puffs instead of rice puffs, then Oats Payasam ? Oats Kesari ? and finally decided to make Oats Appam.

I pat myself for such creative ideas :) Usually before trying new recipe, I used to Google under the recipe name or ingredient, most of the time I won and there won't be interesting recipe available but some times I am able to see a wonderful recipes with that ingredient which had already tried by other food Bloggers especially by Priya. Most of the time my creations matches with Priya's Versatile Recipes. Such a Brilliant n Versatile blogger. Like Minds think alike!! But this time it matched with Sharmi, she had posted Oats Appam a year back.
I tried Oats Appam my way and the result was awesome, oats appam tasted delicious, soft, mild chewy n flavorful. As I have used over ripe banana, appam turned dark brown. None can say that its made of Oats, its like wheat flour appam  but with extra fiber n other health benefits of Oats. So You also try this n enjoy!

Ingredients
  1. Oats             1/2 cup (i used Old Fashioned Oats)
  2. Whole Wheat Flour       1/2 cup
  3. Semolina/Rava/sooji     1 and 1/2 tbsp
  4. Jaggery               3/4 cup
  5. Banana               1 medium
  6. Coconut              1 tbsp (grated or finely chopped)
  7. Cardamom powder       1/4 tsp
  8. Baking soda               a small pinch
  9. Salt       1/4 tsp
  10. Water        3/4 cup
Method
  • First dry roast oats and powder it coarsely in a blender.
  • Then in a pan add jaggery n 1/4 cup of water and heat for 2-3 minutes or until it dissolve.
  • After that cool it and filter the jaggery water using tea filter n keep ready.
  • In a mixing bowl, add wheat flour, rava, powdered oats, salt, baking soda and mix well.
  • Now add jaggery water, grated coconut, mashed banana and cardamom powder and mix it and add remaining water and make it to a thick but free flowing batter (see pic).
  • Leave this mixture for at least 20-30 minutes after that u can deep fry in oil or fry it in paniyaram pan.
  • Heat Paniyaram pan, add few drops of oil in each hole, then pour batter 3/4 to each hole of the pan.
  • Cook in medium heat, cover the pan for 2 minutes after that open the lid and turn other and cook till done.
  • Once done remove from the pan and serve hot or warm or ready for neivedyam.
Notes:
Instead of Jaggery u can also use brown sugar, if so no need to dissolve separately, directly add it to the flour n other ingredients.
You can also deep fry n enjoy it as banana fritters. For deep frying, heat enough oil in a pan, when it get hot using spoon/scoop/ladle directly pour 1 spoon full of batter into the oil and fry in medium heat until done.
I used blender to get finely mashed banana /puree.
Heating powdered jaggery makes the job easier n no need to wait till it thickens or to reach string consistency, just when everything get dissolved remove from the stove n filter it.(see pic).
You can also use ghee/butter instead of oil to cook in paniyaram pan.
