Onion Sambar / Vengaya Sambar, very tasty, flavorful and quick sambar recipe. If u have cooked dal in hand then it takes only 10 minutes to make this sambar. This is my version of Vengaya sambar with very simple ingredients. Here i used both small onions/pearl onions n onions but for more taste n flavor use only small onions. This tastes great with rice, dosa, paniyaram, Ven Pongal etc.

- Tuvar dal / Toor dal / Thuvaram paruppu 1/4 cup
- Pearl Onions/chinna Vengayam 20 no.)peel n roughly chopped)
- Tomato 1 no.(chopped)
- Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
- Sambar Powder 1 tsp
- Tamarind paste 1/4 tsp( dilute in 1/4 cup water)
- Salt to taste
- Cilantro 3-4 tbsp (finely chopped)
- Oil 2 tsp
- Mustard seeds 1/2 tsp
- Cumin Seeds 1/2 tsp
- Fennel seeds 1/4 tsp
- Pepper corns 4 or 5 no.
- Hing 1/4 tsp
- Dry Red chili 2 no. broken
- Curry leaves 1 or 2 sprig
- Pressure cook toor dal with 3-4 cups of water n turmeric powder for 3-4 whistles, then after pressure cool down, lightly mash the dal and keep aside.
- Then heat oil in a pan/kadai, add mustard seeds wait till it splutter then add the other tempering ingredients one by one, fry well and add onions saute for 1-2 minutes.
- After that add tomatoes saute till soft and add the cooked n mashed dal, enough salt and little water(desired consistency) and sambar powder, stir well and bring it to boil.
- Once it starts boiling add tamarind paste and boil for another 1-2 minutes.
- Lastly add some chopped cilantro and turn off the stove.
- That's it...Tasty n flavorful Onion Sambar Ready.
