Paruppu Podi / Sadham Podi / Spiced Lentils Powder / Homemade Paruppu Podi For Rice

Hope u all had a joyful weekend, me too had fun with my family. As the outside weather is too cold we went to near by Mall and had fun for more than 3 hours. I enjoyed shopping/Window shopping and kids had fun playing indoor games there and Sunday cooked chicken(recipe coming soon) and the day went well. And now expecting for another pleasant week.
Coming to Today's recipe Paruppu Podi / Sadham podi, we love all kind of podis and this paruppu podi is my most fav one. That too i love Paruppu Podi from Home Foods, a famous shop(in my home town) for all kind of spiced powders, Instant mixes, etc. Their podi and instant mixes are really fresh, flavorful and tasty. Its my long time wish to recreate their podi at home. I bought about 1kg of Paruppu n poondi podi from Home foods while coming here for first time. Since i love to have podi rice daily for lunch. But the podi lasted only for few months, after that i bought podi from Indian grocery but they were not tasty and i don't like it too, so i asked my mom for homemade version and tried it and happy that my podi matches 75% to home foods podi :)  Now off to the recipe....
Ingredients
  1. Tuvar Dal / Thuvaram Paruppu         1/2 cup
  2. Dalia / Roasted gram dal/Pottu kadalai      2 tbsp
  3. Dry Red chili            5 no.
  4. Cumin seeds           1/4 tsp
  5. Pepper corn             4 or 5 no.
  6. Hing/ Asofoetida      1/4 tsp
  7. Salt     to taste
  8. Oil      1/4 tsp
Method
  • Heat oil in a pan add all the ingredients one by one from tuvar dal to hing and roast till dal turnd golden brown and flavor comes.
  • Then allow it to cool completely, then grind it to a smooth or fine coarse powder along with salt.
  • After that, transfer to a plate, spread and leave it for few minutes then store it in an air tight container.

To serve.
Serve 1 tbsp of podi with hot steamed rice with a dollop of ghee or sesame oil.
 Notes:
To the same recipe u can also add 1-2 sprigs of curry leaves.
I tired with curry leaves to but this time i don't have in hand so i made it with dal n chilies.
I usually grind chilies first then add dal n other ingredients, so that i get a evenly grind and smooth podi.
Adding dalia/pottu kadalai gives nice flavor and smooth texture to the podi, i love it...if u haven't tried with dalia plz give it a try sure u will like it :)
The podi in the bottle is made using curry leaves, more pepper corns (1 tsp) and less chili

  22. Sangeetha - I had made some kootu and rice for dinner. Suddenly a craving for Paruppu podi mixed with kootu sadam hit me.. I had bookmarked this when you posted it.. Quickly made this while the table was being set.. It just took me 5 min to roast everything and viola! podi was ready.. loved it!! am making it again and again and again.. thank you for the perfect recipe.. I did not use curry leaves this time as I felt it might make it like kariveppila podi (which I make often).. Next time will try that version also

  24. Hi...This is my first time I prepared paruppu podi. Tasted good but I added 4 dry red chillies. I can't give this to my 3 yr old daughter.cos it came toooo spicy. Plzzzz can you suggest me how to reduce the spiciness..

    1. Thank you for trying my recipe n sharing your feedback. Reg spiciness- use 2 chillies and while serving kids mix it with rice along with generous ghee or sesame oil.
Some chillies will give more spiciness, it depends on chilli so reduce to 1 or 2 and also u can increase 1-2tbsp dalia/roasted gram dal/pottu kadalai...hope this helps.
