Curry Leaves Paruppu Podi With Sesame Seeds / Karuveppilai Paruppu Podi For Rice

Today's recipe is a healthy and tasty Curry Leaves Podi for Rice. I have already posted a another version of curry leaves podi for Idly/Dosa. This curry leaves podi is for rice/plain rice alone like Paruppu Podi. This karuveppilai Sadham podi is made using Tuvar Dal, Roasted Gram Dal along with sesame seeds and garlic. This is a very flavorful and tasty podi which is healthy too. Generally we know that curry leaves are rich in iron and its good for hair growth, blood count etc. Recently I read it in an article that it helps in treating type 2 Diabetes and googled for more information and was surprised to see the healthy factors behind this curry leaves. In my childhood days I hate curry leaves and never ate fresh curry leaves and always throw them now feeling very bad for doing that. So now-a-days whenever I saw curry leaves in Indian grocery, I buy 2-3 packets and consuming it regularly either in this podi form or as fresh leaves.
The Informations below are from Web : The most important and recent known health benefit of curry leaves, Regular consumption of curry leaves contribute to significant weight loss – which then translates into the successful treatment of diabetes that has been brought on by obesity. Eating 10 fresh fully grown curry leaves every morning for three months is said to prevent diabetes due to heredity factors, as the leaves have weight reducing properties.
Even the Dried curry leaves are also known to be very useful in the treatment of indigestion and heartburn. "Home remedy treatment options suggest that you pour a small glass of cold water into a pot, add a few drops of honey or lime juice as well as ½ a teaspoon of crushed curry leaves and consume the concoction when you start to experience the onset of any of the symptoms that are associated with heartburn or indigestion".

Ingredients For Podi
  1. Curry Leaves     2 cups tightly packed ( i used 2 full n 1/2 packets)
  2. Tuvar Dal/Thuvaram Paruppu       1/4 cup
  3. Roasted Gram Dal/Dalia/Pottukadalai     1/4 cup
  4. Dry Red Chilli                     6-7 no.s
  5. Cumin seeds/Jeeragam         1 tsp
  6. Garlic                3 cloves.
  7. Sesame Seeds       1 tbsp
  8. Hing                    1/4-1/2 tsp
  9. Salt            to taste
  10. Oil             1 tsp
Method
  • Heat a pan, dry roast curry leaves until it turns dry, crisp n flavor comes. Almost 3 to 4 minutes in medium heat.
  • After that transfer the leaves to a plate n keep aside.
  • Now to the same pan add oil, heat it then add garlic, cumin seeds,Tuvar dal, Dalia n dry red chili and roast everything in medium flame until the dal turns golden brown n flavor comes.
  • Then add hing mix it n remove from the stove n transfer it to a plate n allow to cool.
  • To the same pan, add sesame seeds and roast till light golden brown and transfer to a plate.
  • After cooling, first blend garlic n dry red chilli to coarse mixture then add curry leaves and sesame seeds pulse it for few seconds.
  • Now add dal, enough salt and grind it to a fine coarse powder.
  • That's it...healthy n tasty curry leaves paruppu podi ready.
Notes:
Dry roast all the ingredients in medium heat or else it will burn soon n won't be roasted properly.
Fine roasted dal only give nice taste n flavor to the Podi.
As soon as u finish roasting remove the pan from stove top n also transfer the content to a plate/paper or else due to the heat dal will turn black n burnt.
After grinding taste the Podi to check salt if it is less then add little more n run for few seconds. If u feel its spicy no worries when u mix it with oil/ghee (while serving) it tastes perfectly.
Adding sesame seeds is optional if u don't like u can skip it but sure it gives nice falvor and taste, same way the garlic too.
