I love Sweet Potato in any form, and I take steamed sweet potato for dinner often. Sometimes I even make Sweet Potato Raita for lunch or sometimes take it as a snack too. My kids doesn't like sweet potato not even in Fries. Sweet Potato is rich in Vitamin A, Fiber, anti-oxidants and much more nutritional benefits. I wanted them to have sweet potato at least once in a while, so tried Sweet Potato Tikki for them and to my surprise they loved it.
I used half portion of sweet potato & half regular mashed potato, so that the kids will like the tikki. Yeah, and it worked for me. Now they ask me to make this Sweet Potato Tikki every week. For kids who doesn't like sweet potatoes please do try this Tikki recipe and am sure they gonna love it. Adjust spices to your taste, I used bread crumbs to control the moisture and to hold tikki shape, but you can also use corn flour or rice flour. I mostly roast the tikkis in dosa tawa but this time roasted in Cast Iron Pan with little extra oil. The tikkis turned out nice and crisp on outside. Now off to the recipe
Sweet Potato Tikki RecipePrep Time : 20 Minutes | Cook Time : 20 MinutesRecipe Category : Snack/Appetizer | Makes : 6 TikkiIngredients
- Sweet Potato* 1 cup(boiled & Mashed)
- Potato 3/4 cup(1 medium potato, boiled & mashed)
- Bread Crumbs 1/3 cup
- Salt to taste
- Lemon Juice 1 tsp
- Red Chilli Powder 1/2 tsp or to taste
- Chaat Masala 1/2 tsp
- Garam Masala 1/4 tsp
- Pepper Powder 1/4 tsp
- Jeera Powder 1/2 tsp
- Cilantro Finely Chopped 1 Tbsp
- Oil 2-3 Tbsp or as needed to toast tikkis
Notes:*I used 1 big Garnet Sweet Potato Variety. For boiling sweet potato - Wash and cut into 2 halves, put them in a sauce pan, add 1 cup water, pinch of salt and sugar. Cover the pot and boil for 15 minutes, then check by inserting knife or fork. If it went in smoothly that's it, close the stove, drain the water and allow to cool then mash gently and use it in the recipe.I did not use any vegetables here, if you want you can use 1 Tbsp finely chopped onion, capsicum and 2 Tbsp grated carrots. But do not add more veggies, because it will keep the tikki mix sticky or have to adjust with more bread crumbs. If you don't have bread crumbs in hand, just grind 1-2 slice of bread in the blender to a fine powder and use it. Instead of Chilli Powder, you can also use 1 or 2 finely chopped Green chilliesMethod
- In a mixing bowl, add mashed sweet potato, potato & all other spices, salt and lemon juice, cilantro, bread crumbs and mix everything well to a thick dough.
- Grease hands with oil, pinch a lemon sized dough and roll it a ball and flat it to a disc shape.
- Do repeat the same for remaining dough and keep ready.
- Once done, heat oil in a pan, then place 3-4 tikkis (according to the pan size) and toast in medium heat.
- While cooking, brush the top side of the tikkis with oil and let the tikkis cook one side for 1 minute.
- And then flip the tikki and cook for another minutes or two. If needed flip again and cook until the tikkis turned crisp and brown.
- Repeat the cooking process for remaining tikkis too.
- That's it..Tasty Sweet Potato Tikki is ready. Serve Hot with Hot & Sweet Sauce or Chaat Chutneys.
